Day Four – Hawaii Junior Andre Ilagan Makes His Debut at TCOM

Lahaina, Hawaii January 25, 2017– After earning a wildcard into the main draw, junior talent Andre Ilagan took his game to new heights by going up against Zhe Li, the top seeded qualifier and current ranked 236 player in the world. Experience was the advantage as Li powered through each set 6-1, 6-0 over the sixteen-year-old. This was Ilagan’s introduction to the TCOM and his first match competing at the ATP level.

“I didn’t have a game plan going into this match since it was my first time playing against a pro,” started Ilagan. “There was no pressure, I just wanted to have fun.”

When referring to the level of play from the tennis professionals, Ilagan stated, “Consistently, they hit harder and harder. Back home, the players slow down. The pros, they don’t slow down.”

Looking ahead, Ilagan will begin his varsity tennis season in February at Farrington High School. The junior is looking forward to adding to his success in 2017 as he continues to utilize his talents and hard work to win the OIA and Hawaii State titles.

Li will now face Alexander Sarkissian (USA). Sarkissian took out top seeded player of this year’s tournament, Jared Donaldson (USA), in the first round.
