Day Two – Top Seed Qualifier Moves To Main Draw

Lahaina, Hawaii, January 23, 2017– Top seed in the qualifying draw, Zhe Li (CHN), had a close call call with sixth seeded Kaichi Uchida (JPN) today at the 2017 SportMaster Tennis Championships of Maui (TCOM). Li has a current world ranking of 238 and will advance to the main draw which starts tomorrow. Last year, he lost in the first round of the main draw at the TCOM and is looking forward to a more successful 2017 result.

“I’m really happy that I’m in the main draw,” said Li. “I flew from China to Maui and I now can take something back.”

Li, nicknamed “Tiger”, had a close call in the third set when he was serving 3-4, (15-40). Down two break points, Li had to dig deep to save the game.

“I had to fight every point,” explained Li. “When I was down 3-4 and two break points it was a difficult moment. When my opponent didn’t break me in those points, I pushed pushed pushed and eventually took the game and the match.”

Li will play his first main draw match on Wednesday.

Notable players, Vasek Pospicil (CAN), Noah Rubin (USA), Tommy Paul (USA), and past Maui Challenger champions, Jared Donaldson (USA) and Di Wu (CHN) take to the court tomorrow.
